The Beauty of the Arabic Language

All praises belong to Allāh; the Lord of the worlds and peace and salutations upon the Leader of the Messengers and upon his family and companions.

The Arabic language is called the language of the letter ‘Ḍād’ because it doesn’t exist anywhere but the Arabic language. This is why it is known to be the most difficult letter to pronounce for non-Arabs.

This is one of its distinctive characteristics which sets it apart from all the other languages of the world. However, it is sufficient for me to mention a single characteristic which overshadows all others; which is that it is the language of the Noble Qur’ān.

Encouragement to learn the Arabic language

From among all the languages of the world, Allāh ﷻ chose it for His eloquent speech and selected it for His beloved Prophet ﷺ. Hence it has a strong connection and link to our religion; Islām such that it cannot be understood and comprehended without learning and understanding it.

It is no wonder that this encourages and motivates Muslims to study it to strengthen their connection with their Lord despite having various translations for the Qur’ān and Ḥadīth. For the lover, due to his undying love is ready to go above and beyond and exert every fibre of his being to learn the Arabic language so that he can gain nearness to His Lord ﷻ and His Beloved ﷺ.

And alḥamdulillāh, by the grace of Allāh, we understand that translations in whatever language it may be cannot compare to the Arabic language – not even by the weight of an atom – such that its sweetness cannot be tasted, its beauty cannot be perceived and its eloquence cannot be valued except by understanding it from its origin.

Distinct Characteristics of the Arabic Language

I will mention a few points which amazes me. A single word can have a variety of meanings depending on its usage. For example, ‘raghiba fīh’ and ‘raghiba ʿanh’. Due to the difference in prepositions, both words have completely opposite meanings to the other. ‘Raghiba fīh’ means to yearn and desire something while ‘raghiba ʿanh’ means to shun and detest something.

Also, by changing a single vowel to another, the meaning drastically changes. For example, the letters ‘qāf, dāl and rā.’ ‘Qadar’ with a fatḥah on the dāl means destiny, ‘qadr’ with a sukūn on the dāl means measure and ‘qidr’ with a kasrah on the qāf means pot.

And finally, every single word has an origin which is called a ‘maṣdar’ (source) which indicates to all its verbs and derivatives.

In addition to that, the spelling of every word – no matter what it is – agrees to the method of its pronunciation. Just as the language doesn’t change with the passing of time such that its rules are invariable and would never be modified.

It is for this reason that every book written 1000 years ago can be understood in our era and likewise the upcoming generations, with the permission of Allāh ﷻ.

All of this is only because of the Noble Qur’ān. Allāh ﷻ promised us that He would protect it and He would never break His promise.

So, as long as the Noble Qur’ān is protected, its blessed language will also be protected from changes forever and ever.

We thank Allāh for this great bounty and we ask Him to grant us to ability to learn, understand and speak this beautiful language in the best of ways with fluency. Āmīn.
